I received the Heifer International catalog the other day. A wonderful organization. You donate money, and Heifer sends animals to people in places like Africa and Central America. The animal, a goat, a flock of chickens, or a heifer, provides food and an income for the family that receives it. They are supposed to give away an offspring of the animal to another family, so the gift keeps multiplying.
In the past, I’ve given money to Heifer as a Christmas gift to family members. They have gift cards you can give to the person to let them know a gift was given in their name.
As I was preparing my Christmas cards, I thought, “Why don’t I buy a goat or a hive of bees and then put a line in my Christmas cards that says, ‘A gift was given in your name’?” That way my Christmas cards are not just a way to keep in touch with my friends and family, but they are a way of improving the lives of others at the same time.
