Members of Peoria First United Methodist Church pray for and send cards to the police officers in their community.
The ministry started in 2001 with six members praying for a dozen police officers, and now about 127 church members and friends pray for 240 police officers.
Each day, individuals pray for two to three officers randomly assigned to them from a roster supplied by the police department. The prayers are followed up by a personal card.
Some cards are short and simple. Others write more personal stories. One police officer enjoyed getting cards from a woman who talked about her personal joys and travels. The office said, “It was like talking with my grandmother. I really enjoyed it.”
The ministry is very simple. Anyone can pray for someone. And sending a card is something you can do even if you’re not able to be active in other forms of ministry.
